Giant Upset! or, Nobody’s Perfect…

So that was probably the best SuperBowl I can remember. Sure, the Steelers’ victory in SuperBowl XL was the most satisfying, as my Steelers pulled it out. But this was the first game I was pretty much glued to… there was no room for error, and every mistake or great play could well be “the play of the game.” The first two drives gave a preview of a “field goal for touchdown” type game. But then the defenses stepped up and kept up until the fourth quarter, when both QBs started to pass more and make key drives.

At the end of the day, the Patriots’ D blinked first, and Eli and the Giants managed to pick up two touchdowns in exchange for one, defeating the undefeated. Wow.

Oh, and I was rooting for the Giants… mostly because I was rooting against Belichek. But that’s just me. :)

Football Season at Microsoft

One of the best things about Microsoft is the play hard part of the work hard / play hard culture. And while there’s Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Softball, Cricket, Pong, and whatnot, every fall it’s time for the MSFFL - Microsoft Flag Football League! We’ve got about 20 teams across two divisions playing 9 on 9 coed full contact flag football.

Full contact flag football? Yup. This isn’t the no-contact 5-second rush passing drill league that is Underdog Sports. Full contact rushing, blocking, bumping, and everything that makes football fun. OK, except tackling… you do have to go for the flags.

Coed?

Yeah. Seven men, two women on the field. Our girls are bad-asses.

The season opened this past Saturday with Fatal Errors (in red and white), the team I’ve been playing on for the past 3 years, taking on the free agents team, the Hornets (in black). Every year, there’s abut 20 folks wanting to play, and a team is typically formed from that. What they lack in organization they make up in numbers and energy. But football is the thinking athlete’s sport, and well executed plays will win the day. It was a fun game if a bit one-sided; we ended up taking it 35-7. Welcome to the league boys!

You want a friendly corporate softball game? Yahoo! and Google have you covered. You want a game where you’ll be feeling it while you down a few with the guys you laid out earlier that day? Come to Seattle.

Attitude on Wheels

On a Saturday evening, I was looking for something to take my 4-year-old daughter to. Movies were right out, being that it’s just really big TV with pop & popcorn. No, we needed something fun. The Mariners may have been a good choice, but it being your standard cold, rainy August evening, a night under the roof at Safeco didn’t appeal. So Rollerderby is was! Laura and I decided to go to the season championship bout of the Rat City Rollergirls, with Grave Danger taking on the 2006 champions, Sockit Wenches. Now, to be clear, this is not Rollerball, there are not motorcycles, and there isn’t a ball being tossed into a hoop to score points. It’s just a bunch of ladies on roller skates and flashy costumes, skating around a flat track, with one lady on each team trying to lap the other team for points.

Oh, and it’s full contact. They did keep that bit of Rollerball. ;)

We arrived about 4:30 PM and the crowd was starting to arrive. The roller girls arrived on the Seafair Pirates’ boat to much applause. Laura was quite excited and we were having fun with the camera - there’s the self-portrait with Laura in my lap.

There was an opening half of Derby Liberation Front vs Throttle Rockets - the #3 and #4 teams of the 4-team league. Then we had the first half of the championship bout. What does it look like? Well, turns out you can’t capture much with a POS camera. It looks sorts like this:

Turns out the action is fast, so unless you have some real glass, you’re getting lots of blurry, dark pictures. As you can see, the women are in flashy costumes sporting fancy skates, typically some fishnet or leather stockings, and plenty of tattoos. These aren’t cheerleaders out there. They don’t need cheerleaders. These are women who have come to play and throw the occasional elbow. And why not? It’s four minors until you’re forced to sit in the penalty box for a minute!

The crowd was also into the look. We were in the Grave Danger section, and many of the fans were wearing red with horns. Here’s a picture of the woman next us.

Laura actually took the picture (and a great many others)… she’s discovered the joys of digital cameras, and was having a blast taking all sorts of random shots, including a number where she was busy flashing herself…

All in all, it was a fun event for Laura and I, although we bailed at intermission as she was getting tired (it had been a long day). There were a decent number of other kids there too, and it was fairly family friendly. Laura just loves the costumes and tattoos… surprisingly though, I don’t think she paid much attention to the actual event taking place in the middle. It was much more interesting to people watch with a camera!

Jazz win!

Yes, I’m a Jazz fan. And today, my Jazz did something I haven’t seen since Stockton to Malone: they won a playoff series! In fact, after dropping home court and limping into the playoffs, they came back from 0-2 and beat a team I rather despise: Houston. McGrady? Yao? Did great at home for games 1, 2, and 5, but came up a bit short in Game 7, where it counts. And now we have a new set of Jazz players to root for — Carlos Boozer, Matt Harpring, Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko, and Derek (isn’t he a Laker?) Fisher. Gotta love it!

Next: on to Golden State, the team that did the world a favor and knocked off the #1 seeded Dallas Mavericks!

Sunday Olympic Hockey Blogging: Canada vs Finland

I TiVo’d Canada vs Finland (men’s olympic hockey) and am watching that now. Finland is up 1-0 at the 12 minute mark, and it’s all I can do to not look at the final score. Finland is looking much more aggressive.

** Update **

It’s now 2-0 Finland… 15:02 time of the second goal. Not looking good for Canada. Granted, they’re likely going to be at least the #2 or #3 seed in the tourney, but you always want to have a better start than you’re seeing…

** Update **

2nd Period was 0-0, so still 2-0. Canada is energized in the 3rd, just like yesterday vs Switzerland, but they’re still not getting any goals. Not good.

** Update **

7 minutes left, still 2-0, Fins just killed a power play. D’oh!

** Update **

Yup, Finland won, 2-0. Gonna be an interesting tournament…

Enemy Territory

OK… so, I’m a Steelers fan in Seattle. The good news is that it’s all football all day, at least on KJR, and they’re talking about my Steelers. The bad news is that they’re talking much more about this local team for some reason. ;)

Seriously, it’s kinda weird to be rooting for the opposing team, especially for the Big Game. During the regular season (and they’ve met I want to say 4 times in 10 years), who cares. It’s not like this is New York or Cleveland (or even Pittsburgh!) where you’ll get pummelled for rooting against the local team. It’s Seattle, the place where they outlawed “Yankees Suck!” shirts at Safeco. But I did get some looks yesterday when I wore a Steelers black & gold reversible pullover. Some guy wearing a San Francisco Giants hat said that my Steelers logo was the last thing he wanted to see.

Hey buddy — wrong season, wrong sport, wrong league, and wrong team. Don’t go griping to me about rooting for my AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers while you proudly proclaim your loyalty to Barry “ROIDS!” Bonds.

It’s gonna be a fun two weeks…

Steelers Win! Seahawks Win! Hoo-rah!

Today started off well, with my Pittsburgh Steelers stomping all over Jake “The Snake” and the Denver Broncos. What was amazing was how well the Steelers shut down the Broncos defensively — 3 turnovers on Jake (technically 4, but one was on a 4th and 10 and returned for no gain, so if it wasn’t a turnover on a fumble it would have been a turnover on downs) for a 34-17 game. Big Ben looked great, and The Bus didn’t fumble the ball. Awesome game.

My daughter and I went over to Safeway, picked up a case of Rolling Rock from Latrobe, PA, and headed over to our pal Dean and Kelly’s for the Seahawks game. They also handled their opponent, the Carolina Panthers, with ease.

And now… Steelers and Seahawks. Yeah baby…

Oh, and I’m rooting for the Steelers, if anyone had thoughts I might be jumping on the local bandwagon. Loyalty!
