Anyone need a second baseman? Cheap!

So, just like last year when the Mariners decided to cut John Orlerud because they couldn’t trade him, this year they’ve cut Bret Boone. How incompetent is Bill Bavasi? Granted, if you think you’re team is going down the tubs, and you have an aging veteran who isn’t performing, you move him. The Yankees picked up Olerud after he was released… so presumably, what we were talking about was a matter of money with Olerud… which means Bavasi didn’t get the best deal done. With Boone… my guess is we’ll see the same thing. Teams will all wait each other out, and then they’ll bid from zero versus bidding from $8 million or whatever he’s set to make this year. And Bret gets more money… hell, if I’m Bret’s agent, I encourage teams to pick him up after he’s released as it’s going to be more money for Bret!

Y’know… I’m just not feeling it for the M’s as much as I used to. I think it’s the same reason I no longer follow the Jazz all that much… I need to root for people, not a team. I really don’t know who’s on the M’s anymore, nor care that much. Sexson and Beltre? Jeremy Reed? Eh. Whatever happened to Bucky Jacobson (oh yeah, DL). Last year was the same. They brought in Spezio and Aurilia… boy, those were busts. Not a Jeff Cirillo bust, but when you sign a guy like Aurilia for 2 years and then cut him after 6 months, you know you may have made a mistake.

The thing I miss is that there isn’t an attitude… and I think that all went when Lou went to Tampa Bay. The latest managers of the M’s… Melvin and now Hargrove… just seem to be willing to take it. I just don’t get it.
